T1D is typically diagnosed in children and young adults, although it can develop at any age. The exact cause of T1D is not known. There is currently no cure for T1D, and treatment typically involves daily insulin injections or the use of an insulin pump to help regulate blood sugar levels.

Without enough insulin, glucose builds up in the blood and can't be used by the body's cells for energy. This can lead to high blood sugar levels, which over time can cause serious health complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, and nerve damage, blindness, and loss of limbs.
