JDRF One Walk, 5 Boroughs Walk 2023

Don't Call it a Comeback!

NOTE:
JDRF must CANCELED THE JDRF 5 BOROUGHS ONE WALK due to the severe weather forecasted in this area on October 7th. So on Sunday 10/8 we did a late afternoon bike ride on the Walk route.  Solidarity and gratitude.

After a childhood spent walking/fundraising for what was then JDF with my parents and 1 brother (my other siblings weren't born yet), I slowly renewed my commitment to JDRF when I moved to NYC shortly after college (shortly after dinosaurs stopped roaming the earth).  Eventually I formed a JDRF Walk team that grew over the years with many friends (co-captains), past and present, and of course, my ever-expanding family, helping with every step (get it?).  In an effort to keep things fresh, we expanded to JDRF walks in multiple cities, brilliant T shirts (thanks to designer friends) and even costumes with props.  Eventually, other things in my life needed a BIG change and I found a new way to participate with JDRF. I got into my first T1D clinical trial and publicly stated that if I was accepted, I'd commit myself to the JDRF Ride. So, I traded in my sneakers for some clicky-clacky shoes and a heck of a lot of my time on a bike.

This year, we have had and continue to have some really big life changes (A BIG birthday, we moved, we got married, we have a new niece).  None of the JDRF location bike rides this summer worked with my schedule, and my training would have been very minimal.  I have tried to convince myself that it is indeed OK to take a year off, but I keep coming back to the same nagging thoughts about diabetes sure isn't taking 2023 off and that really isn't helping me sleep at night (insert deep dive on Catholic guilt).

The NYC One Walk has a new location this year (October 7th), Prospect Park in Brooklyn, instead of crossing the bridge.  As luck would have it, we just moved (Memorial Day) a mile closer to the park.  Prospect Park was the site of my very first JDRF training ride. Later, I often trained there my with coaches in secret, after I was crushed when I didn't reach my Ride day goals.

Someone once told me I "find signs" in things (and hearts).  As long as those signs are positive, I just hope to keep this streak going! We won't have fancy shirts (but maybe you still have an old Alecia's Stem Cells Shirt?) but more importantly, I hope we can continue to help the future of all of those touched by T1D.
