My son, Ethan, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 9 years ago. Since March 1, 2004, diabetes has followed him everywhere he has gone. It has been to every single baseball game, it has tagged along to school, it has pestered him at every meal, it has kept him (and me) awake at night and it is still his constant companion. Diabetes hasn't given him a break for one hour in the last 9 years. Not even for a single minute.
While diabetes is a manageable disease, it is certainly not easy, and as scary as this may sound, it threatens his life every day. Since the day he was diagnosed, our family has been fighting this disease by helping raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The JDRF has played a pivotal role in the advancement of diabetes research, including funding most major scientific breakthroughs in the field since it was founded in 1970. It is incredible and amazing to see the fundraising in action. These innovations have dramatically improved the quality of life for people with diabetes; and because of the JDRF, Ethan has the chance to live better and stronger.
In 2009, I found what I believe is the best way to beat diabetes - riding to cure it.
The JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes has changed my life tremendously, and this year, I will participate in my sixth and seventh Ride. This year I will be riding in LaCrosse, Wisconsin and Tucson, Arizona and Ethan will be joining me for the ride in LaCrosse! I will again ride for Ethan, who battles diabetes every day and I will ride in the hopes that many others will never know a life with diabetes.
Please join us in this fight! Each mile we ride and each dollar we raise is one big leap forward towards better treatments and a cure for diabetes. We're getting closer, and I am never giving up. Any amount you are able to give is greatly appreciated and every dollar helps.
Don't give until it hurts - give until it feels GOOD!
