On February 16, 2004 our daughter's life changed in an unbelievable way.  That was the day the doctor walked into her room in the emergency center and told her she had Type I diabetes.  To be honest I don't know how long it took before I remembered to breath but I watched my unbelievably strong child turn without a tear in her eyes and ask the doctor, "Can I play field hockey?".  When he said yes she looked at me and said, "Then everything will be alright."  Well tears did come eventually for all of us but for my daughter they came most often when she couldn't do things that most of us take for granted.  If her blood sugar was too low she couldn't drive someplace she wanted to go, she wasn't able to focus on a test she was taking, she couldn't be on the field when her team needed her.  She would have to eat or drink something even if she wasn't hungry or thirsty.  As a mother I had to watch as she thought her dream of playing Division I field hockey in college may not come true and I would worry about her health in the future and if her beautiful little body was up for the incredible challenges this disease brings with it, like blindness, heart and kidney damage and nerve damage.  Well she did see her field hockey dream come true but it came with things like checking her blood sugar sometimes 10 or more times a day, playing even though she didn't feel well because of her condition and having to sit the bench when her team needed her.  Taking a cue from her athletic devotion I decided to support her athletically by taking part in The Ride to a Cure to raise funds to find a cure for diabetes.  My hope is that one day my daughter and all those affected by this disease can pack up all their diabetes paraphernalia and never look at it again.  With your help we can find a cure and with your support you will know that you had a part in that discovery!
