How an insulin pump works

On July 27, to help JDRF find a cure for Type 1 diabetes, I am stepping up my efforts and am going to participate in the Ride for a Cure from Burlington, VT to Vergennes, VT and back.  Yep, that is right 73-miles on a bicycle.  I am reaching out to you today asking you to donate and support my 73-mile ride!

Why is raising money so important to me?

As many of you know my 9-year old cousin Laurel has lived with juvenile diabetes for the past 3 years.

This past month Laurel started using an insulin pump instead of insulin shots to manage her blood sugar levels. The pump slowly releases rapid-acting insulin, which is similar to how a pancreas works. (see second picture on right to see how it works)

Although the pump should improve her ability to maintain steady blood sugar levels it has been a rough start:

    • She is petrified to change the catheter and it can take up to an hour of her crying to get it changed
    • She has dropped to a dramatic low of 28 (normal blood sugar is between 100-160)
    • Kids in class are asking her what the pump is and why she is wearing it.
    • My aunt and uncle have to wake up every 3 hours throughout the night to check her blood sugar levels

How can you keep me motivated?

    • Show your support through a donation!
    • Reprimand me if you hear me try to give an excuse to ditch training (See cheat sheet).
    • Make me an awesome playlist to entertain me during my hours of riding a bike.
    • Go for a long(ish) bike ride with me on a weekend or a short ride after work.
    • If you don't want to bike, you can take my bike rack/car and can meet me in:
      • Great Falls for a picnic
      • Leesburg for wine tastings
      • Harpers Ferry for camping on Saturday night and some tubing on Sunday
    • Spread the word to others about JDRF and making a donation!
