Welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!

This is my first time participating in the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes.  At the end of July, I will be cycling 100 miles in one day with JDRF riders from all over the country to raise money needed to fund research to cure Type 1 Diabetes.

Our son Ari (5) was diagnosed with this chronic and thus far incurable life-threatening disease this past November.  Unlike the more common Type 2 Diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is unrelated to diet and lifestyle and there was nothing that Ari could have done to prevent it.  T1D is an autoimmune disease that strikes without warning and causes the body to destroy its own insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

Like all people with T1D, Ari is completely insulin-dependent.  He wears an insulin pump 24/7 that provides a continuous flow of insulin via a tiny tube going into his his arm or back.  He has to move the pump site every 2-3 days.  He has to prick his finger 8 times each day to draw blood to check his blood sugar and count carbohydrates before every meal and snack to determine how much extra insulin he needs to cover the food he eats.  This amazing little guy does all of this, and more, without ever complaining!

Many people think that T1D can be controlled by insulin.  Insulin does keep a person alive but it is not a cure and cannot prevent the potentially devastating effects of diabetes.  JDRF is working every day to change this. And every dollar I raise helps them continue to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community until a cure is found.

I have set an ambitious fundraising goal for my first Ride and am asking for your help to get there.  During the next few months I will be hard at work training, and your generous gift today will propel me toward the finish line.  Please donate and help JDRF achieve its goal of a world without T1D...turning Type One into Type None, hopefully in Ari's lifetime.

Please check back to view my fundraising progress as my Ride weekend approaches. And please check out Ari's video above (or here: http://youtu.be/2vEaWZ2-J3c).

Thank you so much for your support!

    Dan Vogel
