Hi, my name is Ethan and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 4.
Since March 1, 2004, diabetes has followed me everywhere I have gone. It has been to every single baseball game, it has tagged along to school, it has pestered me at every meal, it has kept me (and my parents) awake at night and it is still my constant companion. Diabetes hasn't given me a break for one hour in the last 9 years. Not even for a single minute.
While diabetes is a manageable disease, it is certainly not easy, and as scary as this may sound, it threatens my life every day.
Since the day I was diagnosed, I have given myself over 20,000 doses of insulin and checked my blood sugar even more. My family has been fighting this disease by helping raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The JDRF has played a pivotal role in the advancement of diabetes research, including funding most major scientific breakthroughs in the field since it was founded in 1970. These innovations have dramatically improved the quality of life for people with diabetes; and because of the JDRF, I have the chance to live better and stronger.
In 2009, my mom found what I believe is the best way to beat diabetes - riding to cure it!
Last year, I rode in my first JDRF Ride to Cure in Tucson, AZ. Thanks to generous donations from friends, family and even strangers, I was able to raise the money and ride 111 miles! It was one of the coolest things I have ever done! This year, my Mom and I will be riding in LaCrosse, WI. But I need your help!
