Join me in the fight to cure, better treat and prevent type 1 diabetes!
In November of this year, I, along with my husband Tim, will be riding our bikes 100 miles in JDRF's Ride to Cure Diabetes, along with hundreds of other riders across the country to improve the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D).
I was diagnosed with T1D 40 years ago at the age of 4. That's 14, 600 days with diabetes. I don't remember life without diabetes. I do remember thinking about diabetes every day, every minute, sometimes every second of each day. I think about pricking my fingers multiple times (over 50,000 so far), programming/using my insulin pump, the carbohydrates in the food I eat, and the exercise I do each day and how it all affects my blood sugar and insulin dose. Some days I get it somewhat right, and other days, not so much. It is a CONSTANT challenge! There are so many variables that affect blood sugars and my overall health; there are no set rules, and no ONE solution. I must be prepared for high blood sugars, and low blood sugars all the time, including every time I leave the house, and everytime I go to sleep at night. It is a balancing act that takes strength, determination, support and a whole LOT of patience!
I grew up being told I could do anything with my life regardless of my diabetes. I DO dream of seeing a cure for this disease in my lifetime so that I, Tim, my children, and my family and friends can experience life WITHOUT diabetes. How cool whould that be?!
As the leader of the type 1 diabetes community, JDRF unifies global efforts to cure, treat and prevent T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible?
Why am I choosing to ride a hundred miles on my bike you may ask? I want to help "give back" to an organization who gives HOPE and LOVE to so many people like me with T1D. I have 2 beautiful children, and I want to be healthy for them for many years to come. I have been married for 21 years to the most loving, patient, and supportive husband EVER, and I want to be healthy for lots more anniversaries!! So I need your help to raise funds for a cure!
I have a wonderful support system in my husband, kids, family and friends. Over the years, many of you have helped support me and encouraged me through rough times, and some of you may have always wanted to help me but didn't know how. Well donating to the JDRF is one sure way to help!
I am asking for your support. Please donate to my personal fundraising efforts. By doing so, you can help me make a difference for millions of people living with type 1 diabetes. Any donation you make on my page is fully tax deductible and when you donate online, you will receive a tax receipt. No amount is too small, it will all help!
Thank you for your support! Here's to a life without Type 1 Diabetes!!!
Love, Heather
