As you all know, Christy has been living with Type 1 Diabetes since she was two years old. She will be insulin dependent for the rest of her life. Our family continues to learn more about diabetes and the lifestyle changes living with the disease requires. Christy continues to amaze us. She is a daily reminder to all of us of courage, spirit, responsibility and a positive attitude.
Christy is now 12 years old (WOW!) and will be entering 7th grade (yes Middle School!) in the fall. Christy continues to do fabulously on her pump and is becoming more and more independent with her diabetes care. She continues to love her sports, especially basketball and soccer. Her basketball team won multiple tournaments this year and soccer is in full swing now where she is her team’s goalkeeper. Her “Ambush” team recently finished 2nd at the Schwan’s USA Cup in Blaine, MN, and are always in the mix for a medal! Having diabetes certainly hasn’t slowed her down at all!
With Christy as my inspiration, this year I’ll be donning spandex again to ride in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Ride to Cure both in LaCrosse as well as the even more challenging ride through beautiful Lake Tahoe, CA. In each ride, I'll be joining hundreds of other cyclists riding 100 miles in one day. We will spend hundreds of hours training our bodies for the event. I ride with the belief that with every mile pedaled and every dollar raised, we are closer to a cure. That is why I'm asking for your support. Our goal is to raise $5 million to fund research to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the Ride to Cure. I have done 5 JDRF Rides to Cure and each one has been a very special, memorable, breathtaking, challenging experience. Each has had its “goosebump” moment, and I can’t wait to ride again this year! It is always so amazing to see so many people come together to support such a great cause.
Researchers now more than ever are hopeful they will find a cure for diabetes in Christy’s lifetime! In fact, just this summer, researchers are embarking in a large clinical trial of the artificial pancreas which, if all goes well, could be the next game changer for Type 1 diabetics. Christy cannot wait to get one! I'm writing to ask for your support because each of us can make a real difference. My personal goal is to raise $6,000.00 by race day. Together, we can make the cure for diabetes a reality.
Thank you for helping me meet my goal. Together we can support the research to find a cure for Juvenile Diabetes to help Christy and other children like her live with the disease.
