The 2012 cycling season is upon us us, and Team Altmann is growing. That's right, both Kent and Jen will be riding in the 2012 JDRF Ride to Cure. We are asking for your support again.
This year is special. Kent is celebrating 30 healthy years with Type 1 Diabetes. To celebrate, not only will both of us ride 100 miles in a single day starting in La Crosse, Wisconsin this August, but Kent will also ride in the JDRF Ride to Cure in Death Valley, California this October. That's quite a way to celebrate!
Three hundred miles is just the beginning. We will be joining hundreds of other cyclists riding 100 miles in one day, through Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota, and later, the desert of Death Valley. We will spend 6 to 8 months (hundreds of hours and thousands of miles) training our bodies for the events.
Type 1, or juvenile diabetes can be a deadly disease. It affects millions of people--a large and growing percentage of them children. Insulin keeps people with type 1 diabetes alive, but it's NOT a cure. Along with the challenges of living with diabetes, there are many severe and/or fatal complications caused by the disease. But there is good news; a cure for type 1 diabetes is within reach. The JDRF funding and its leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in diabetes research. JDRF funds a major portion of all type 1 diabetes research worldwide, more than any other charity.
Our children, Lily and Claire, are our inspiration. As children of a type 1 diabetic, their "risk of developing type 1 diabetes is 10 to 20 times the risk of the general population; the risk can go from 1 in 100 to roughly 1 in 10 or possibly higher," according to Dr. James H. Warram of the Harvard School of Public Health and Joslin Diabetes Center. Help us raise funds to allow JDRF to continue to pursue a cure for juvenile diabetes. JDRF's goal is to raise $4.5 million through five national Ride to Cure events.
We are writing to ask for your support because each of us can make a real difference. Team Altmann's goal is to raise $10,000 by August 1, 2012. You can help by sponsoring Team Altmann with a tax-deductible donation to JDRF.
Together, we can make the cure for diabetes a reality.
