This year I am going to take part in in my first JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes in Nashville, TN with my husband Josh. I have watched and supported Josh in the rides he has done and now it is my turn to join the fight. This ride is focused on raising money to find better treatments for Type 1 as well as finding a cure for this terrible disease. As most of you know, our youngest son Gavin was diagnosed with this disease 2 years ago, shortly after his 4th birthday. We have been trying our best to keep him healthy and living as normal a life as possible while dealing with this.
Unfortunately this is not always easy as it means that we are having to measure and dose every bit of food that he eats. This also includes multiple finger pokes each day, a pump site change every other day and a glucose monitor sensor site change once a week. It is heartbreaking to have to poke and prod our sweet little boy each and every day and also try to explain to him why we need to do this in order to keep him alive and healthy. Unfortunately this disease also makes it harder for him to do normal things that 6 year old boys do such as birthday parties, sleepovers and play dates. Gavin does extremely well with all of this and it has become more of a routine and just a part of his everyday life.
However, he definitely has his bad days like when he says ?I wish I didn?t have diabetes anymore? which just about break our hearts. Unfortunately, this in one thing that mommy and daddy can't take away and make him better right now. So this is why we ride. Along this journey of dealing with Gavin's Type 1, we have met many other families that are affected by this disease. We all have to deal with the trials and tribulations of this disease and all have one goal in mind. We need to find a cure! There are millions of people in the world that are dealing with Type 1 and millions more that are going to be diagnosed.
So what I am asking of you is to please take a moment and help us with this battle. I am going to do all the hard work, the training, sweating and putting on many miles on the bike. If you would be willing donate to my ride fund and help us to raise the money that is essential to finding a cure, it would mean the world to us and the millions of people who live with T1D every day. We need the help and support of you all to fight this disease and to help make it a possibility to be able to tell Gavin that "we did find a cure!" So please consider donating any amount and keep in mind that it is a tax deductible donation and your employer may offer a matching donation as well. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! We greatly appreciate any and all donations.
Sincerely,
Tammy Stahl
