Hello, friends! Here I am again, raising money for JDRF! This August, my family and I will be taking part in our third JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes, along with hundreds of other riders across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising millions of dollars (and riding 100 miles, which will definitely pose a different kind of challenge!).
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) strikes both children and adults at any age. It comes on suddenly, as it did for me January of 2012, and causes dependence on injected or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications.
As the leader of the T1D community, JDRF unifies global efforts to cure, treat, and prevent T1D. In this role, JDRF has funded more than $1.6 billion in diabetes research since its founding in 1970, and has meaningfully advanced the T1D scientific frontier and the management of this disease.
Participating in the ride to cure the past two summers was truly a life-changing experience. Not only did my family and I collectively raise upwards of $20,000 but the experience has led to connections in the diabetes community that have inspired and encouraged me beyond belief. The support of my family and friends pushed me through all 100 miles and left me with the confidence to know that if I could complete the century ride, I could live a full and beautiful life even with type 1 diabetes.
Now, more than ever, we can make a crucial difference. Together, we can make the cure a reality!
