Hello! This year, I'll be rolling along with hundreds of other riders across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $5 million. Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children.
I ride because diabetes sucks! No children should have to endure the shots, site changes, carb counting and finger pokes diabetic children do. Diabetes is passed down the family, so some day I'll probably have a diabetic Grandchild or Great Grandchild. I'm investing now in something that I'll see the most worth while return on in the future. I'd love to see a magic pill cure for our children in the future.
There are currently some great strides being made through the funds we've raised together in the past. I was reading the other day about advances in continuous glucose monitoring systems. Many of the long term issues faced by diabetics stem from the hours they're blood sugar levels are out of wack. It's simply a product of the limited number of times you can poke your fingers to test every day. If it's monitored constantly and corrected constantly then we have a much better system and healthier diabetic.
JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
