Join me in the fight to cure, better treat and prevent type 1 diabetes!
Hello! My name is Catie Hewson and I have type 1 diabetes (T1D). Basically, this means that my pancreas does not produce insulin, therefore I am dependent on constant injections. I was diagnosed at 6 years old and will turn 13 in March of this year. I have lived more than half of my life with T1D! I estimate that I have pricked my finger to check my blood glucose levels about 17,000 times and given myself about 13,000 insulin shots. I do the best I can to manage this disease but it can be difficult. I need to always make sure my blood glucose does not go too high, which could result in complications in the future. Also, I need to make sure that I don't go too low, which could make me unconscious and possibly result in a coma. Having T1D and balancing food, exercise, and insulin is a challenge. It is a challenge I did not ask for, but it is one that I must overcome until a cure is found.
This year, with my Dad, I'll be taking part in JDRF's Ride to Cure Diabetes in Death Valley, CA on October 19th, along with hundreds of other riders across the country to improve the lives of all people affected by T1D and to help find a cure. My goal is to ride 100 miles through Death Valley which is a major challenge I hope to overcome.
I am asking for your support. Please donate to my personal fundraising efforts. By doing so, you can help me make a difference for me and the millions of people living with type 1 diabetes.
Did you know that:
As the leader of the type 1 diabetes community, JDRF unifies global efforts to cure, treat and prevent T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible?
Thank you for your support!
