On July 14, 2012 Rachel and I will be joining hundreds of other cyclists at the JDRF Ride to Cure in Burlington, VT where we will ride 100 miles in our journey towards finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. While we're there, we'll be riding our Diabetes Fighting Machines in honor of 2 of our sons (Jake, diagnosed at 13 months, and Matt, diagnosed at 8), as well as my Mother Bunny, Rachel's sister Anne and cousin Zack as well as the 40 people who are diagnosed with this disease every day!!!
We will also be riding for our son Ryan, who does not have Type 1 Diabetes, but who feels the worry and the impact of the disease every single day, and who wonders when the diagnosis will happen to him.
Last year, with your help, Rachel and I raised more than $21,000 in our Ride to Cure. I was honored, at the Lake Tahoe Ride, to have been presented with the Green Jersey (see below), as the Ride's top fundraiser!! How amazing would it be if you could help us capture a second green jersey this year!!! Please consider making a donation to help us all achieve that goal!!
Our experience in Lake Tahoe last year was truly amazing. I have never been quite as inspired as I was during that event. As our thighs burned while we rode the Sierra Nevada mountain passes that we only dream about here in South Jersey, the thought of getting off the bike would cross our minds...NO...keep on pedaling...our kids don't get to quit having diabetes when it gets tough and until we find a cure, we don't get to quit either!
As a result of last year's inspiration, I'm personally stepping it up a notch. You may have noticed the red jersey worn by the man in the photo above. He's a Ride Coach...one of my heroes! His job is to ensure that every cyclist in the ride has the same unbelievable experience that I did. I'm grateful to the Ride Coaches who helped me on my journey last year. I am honored, this season, to have been selected as a Ride Coach and will make it my personal challenge to ensure that cyclists at this year's ride have the same experience that I did last year...perhaps even better! That means I'll be working extra hard, to be in even better shape so that I can truly be a motivating factor in someone else's success along this important journey!
But wait...there's more. I'll also be riding in another amazing event to help raise awareness about this JDRF Ride and the need to find a cure. It's called Hope on 2 Wheels!! Together with 23 other cyclists, I'll be riding more than 250 miles from New York City to Washington DC, non-stop in one day, with the HOPE that I can inspire others to join me at the JDRF Ride to Cure in Burlington, and with the HOPE that we can raise more money than ever to fund the cure!!
Are you inspired yet?? If so, please scroll back up, click on the DONATE button and help me make a difference in the lives of my children and so many others...it's truly important and we appreciate your generosity more than you will ever know!!!
This won't be the last ride that I do...I'll continue riding until my kids no longer have to worry about what it means to grow up with Type 1 Diabetes. That said, I hope it's the last Ride to Cure and that next year, with your generous help, we can all participate in the Ride to Celebrate!
The banner above my head says FINISH...but it should say WON'T FINISH...UNTIL WE FIND A CURE!!
Please make a donation today...no matter how large or small...every dollar helps!!
