Welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!

I’m taking part in the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes, along with hundreds of riders from around the world, to raise money for JDRF, the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. I will be cycling 100 miles in Death Valley CA on October 16 - 19th on behalf of Kate Morrow; age 5.

My family's lives changed forever on October 5th 2012 when our daughter Kate was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 4.  At 12:00pm life was "normal" - as you might know "normal".  Six hours later our doctor handed my wife and me a box of syringes, needles, insulin, meters, testing strips and a number of books and asked us to test Kate's blood sugar and give the first insulin shot in some sort of effort to get us started in our new reality of life.

The doctor's office seemed so far away from our home, the security of our lives, and everything we knew. I could only hear the voice of the doctor as I sat broken in the old faded leather chair in the corner of the doctor's office because my eyes were shut so tight in some weird attempt to escape the events of the day.  I will never forget the whisper "Your Daughter has Type 1 Diabetes but she will go to the prom, she will get married, she can have children, and if the divine plan was that she will live to 100 she will - but you and your wife will have to manage this disease very carefully and eventually your daughter will have to manage this disease very carefully for the rest of her life."

We were lucky though in that we did not have to spend a week in the hospital with a crash course in how we just become Kate's pancreas.  We learned that over the next few weeks - months - year at home.

It has taken time to adjust to our new normal and now it is time to help find a cure.

     Did you know T1D:

    - Strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet and lifestyle.

    - Occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin is essential to turning food into energy.

    - Requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin.

JDRF is working every day to change this. And every dollar I raise helps them continue to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community until a cure is found.

I have been hard at work training and fundraising, and your gift today will propel me toward the finish line. Please donate and help JDRF achieve its goal of a world without T1D.
