Welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!
My sister, Meredith is awesome. Everyday, she lives with Type 1 Diabetes. And so does my family. We count carbs for her and remind her when to test her blood sugar. She gives herself insulin. Something I could never do. I'm afraid of needles.
My mom and I want to help Meredith. We want her to remember the days when she used to have diabetes. We have deciede to ride 100 miles on our bikes this summer to raise money for JDRF. JDRF funds research to cure Type 1 Diabetes. JDRF is Meredith's best shot at a cure. I want to be able to say I helped find that cure for her. She has lots of friends with diabetes, too. They benefit from JDRF as well.
Here are some interesting facts about Type 1 Diabetes (T1D):
- Strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet and lifestyle.
- Occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin is essential to turning food into energy.
- Requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin.
JDRF is working every day to change this. And every dollar I raise helps them continue to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community until a cure is found.
I have a pretty big challenge ahead of me. Training for a 100 mile ride. Getting my mom to train for a 100 mile bike ride. Raising money for JDRF. But none of these is as big as the challenges Meredith faces everyday. She may be only 8, but she is a fighter, a hero, and she is awesome. She is my little sister.
Please help me with donations to let Meredith know how much we want her to have her cure. Every amount helps. I ride for my sister. Help me make a difference in her world.
