My son, Ethan, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes over 10 years ago. Since March 1, 2004, type 1 diabetes has followed him everywhere he has gone. It has been on every single bike ride, it has tagged along to school, it has pestered him at every meal, it has kept him (and me) awake at night and it is still his constant companion. Diabetes hasn’t given him a break for one hour in the last 10 years. Not even for a single minute.
While diabetes is a manageable disease, it’s certainly not easy, and as scary as this may sound, it threatens Ethan’s life every day. Since the day he was diagnosed, our family has been fighting this disease by helping raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. JDRF has played a pivotal role in the advancement of diabetes research, including funding most major scientific breakthroughs in the field since it was founded in 1970. It is amazing to see the fundraising in action. These innovations have dramatically improved the quality of life for people with diabetes; and because of JDRF, Ethan has the chance to live better and stronger.
In 2009, I found what I believe is the best way to beat diabetes — riding to cure it.
The JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes has changed my life tremendously, and Ethan is now a regular rider! Ethan completed his second ride last year in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Unfortunately he was involved in a crash 35 miles in to the ride which resulted in a broken tailbone – but he kept on going! He rode the full 100 miles – even with the injury and showed everyone that diabetes will not stop him!
Please join us in this fight! I am starting my fourth year as coach of the Utah Chapter and I will participate in my eighth and ninth rides this year – in Burlington, VT and Tucson, AZ. Ethan will join me for the ride in Tucson in November. In order for Ethan and me to participate in our rides this year – we need to raise $10,000!
Each mile we ride and every dollar we raise is one big leap forward towards better treatments and a cure for diabetes. We’re getting closer, and we are never giving up. Any amount you are able to give is greatly appreciated and every dollar helps.
Thank you for your continued support and love. Together we are making the cure for type 1 diabetes a reality. Ethan, my family and I thank you in advance for your support.
All the best,
