10 years of riding to cure diabetes

Tom, Mary and Ian after their last successful JDRF ride in Death Valley.

Welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!

When our son Jake was 6 years old he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, also known as Juvenile Diabetes. A person with Type 1 must take daily insulin injections just to stay alive. Long term they run the risk of complications that can lead to blindness, amputation and even death.

Today Jake is 23 and lives in Chicago, but he still has Type 1 diabetes. He still has to check his blood sugar, wear an insulin pump, and keep a much closer eye on his health than most 23 year olds. As a family we’ve always done everything we could for Jake personally, and to help raise money to fund research to find a cure.

Ten years ago, my wife Mary and I decided to participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Ride for a Cure. I was serving on the board of the local JDRF chapter at that time and our executive director challenged us to ride with her in Death Valley. This will be our tenth JDRF ride and seventh in Death Valley. Jake's younger brother Ian will also be riding with us, making his fifth JDRF ride.

When the ride gets hard and hot and I don’t feel like I can push the pedals even one more time, I think of Jake. At the end of the ride I can get off my bike. I don’t have to ride tomorrow. But Jake doesn’t have that luxury. Tomorrow he’ll still have diabetes. He’ll still be testing his blood sugar, counting carbs and taking insulin, just to stay alive. If he can do all that, and he’s been doing that for 17 years, then I can keep pedaling and finish this ride.

JDRF is working every day to find a cure for this disease. And every dollar I raise helps them continue to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community until a cure is found.

I have been hard at work training and fundraising, and your gift today will propel me toward the finish line. Please donate and help JDRF achieve its goal of a world without T1D.

Please check back to view my fundraising progress as my Ride weekend approaches. Thank you for your support.
