Ashley and Me - at the 2014 Walk to Cure Diabetes Kickoff
11 Year Old Ashley is a Competitive Swimmer! Diabetes does NOT define her... she defines herself !

Welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!

This year I am riding through Death Valley in honor of Ashley Benkert.

Ashley is 11 years old and on April 13, 2011 her life changed. Ashley was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

Despite the daily struggle to maintain her blood sugar levels she is still able to be a competitive year round swimmer and chearleader.

She also enjoys softball,  gymnastics, and is an "A" student with many friends.

This year Ashley is our local Walk to Cure Diabetes Ambassador - spreading the word about T1D and JDRF.

She does not let diabetes define her. She defines herself.

I am riding for her - so her type one can become type none.

    Did you know T1D:

    - Strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet and lifestyle.

    - Occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin is essential to turning food into energy.

     - Requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin.

JDRF is working every day to change this. And every dollar I raise helps them continue to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community until a cure is found.

I have been hard at work training and fundraising, and your gift today will propel me toward the finish line. Please donate and help JDRF achieve its goal of a world without T1D.

Please check back to view my fundraising progress as my Ride weekend approaches. Thank you for your support.
