Question: What do three brothers (Scott, Doug and Paul Kasper) and their son/nephew (Ryan Kasper) have in common?

Answer: A whole bunch of immediate family members with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D)!

• Jake Kasper - (Scott's son, Ryan's brother, Paul and Doug's nephew)
• Matt Kasper - (Scott's son, Ryan's brother, Paul and Doug's nephew)
• Anne Schlesinger (Scott's sister-in-law, Ryan's Aunt)
• Zachary Lang (a Cousin on the Schlesinger side)

But wait - There's one more person with T1D that is worthy of special note this year, because it involves a special birthday wish!

• Bunny Kasper - The Mom and Grandmother to the Team Kasper riders...Scott, Doug, Paul and Ryan are riding in honor of the fact that the Team Mom and Grammy celebrates her 70th Birthday wishing for a cure for herself, her grandchildren and everyone else with T1D!

That's why on August 17, 2013 Scott, Doug, Paul and Ryan (age 13) will ride 100-miles in the JDRF Ride to Cure!

In July 2008, Ryan (who's two brothers both have T1D) was asked to give the one word that described how his life had been impacted by T1D. The picture below shows what he said:

Well this year Ryan will not be invisible any longer. As he prepares to tackle the 100-mile challenge, here is what he has to say:

Ryan's Story:

"I am one of the millions of kids that live with diabetes every day. I do not physically have it myself but my two brothers do. Living with diabetes from my perspective is just as hard as any other perspective. Having to always keep a sharp eye on my brothers to make sure they are okay is difficult. My parents must keep a close eye on them too, which for a while made me feel invisible. Diabetes is not easy to live with if you have it or if you are forced to watch loved ones suffer through it.

Living with diabetes is a challenging way of life. When my brothers and I play outside they could easily have their blood sugars drop, and they have to look out for that as well as me. It is a disease that has no current cure, and my goal, like many other people, is to find the unknown cure by raising money for the research of diabetes. That's why I asked my Dad if I could ride with him this year in the JDRF Ride to Cure.

I feel trapped in an unbreakable barrier always watching carefully for the health of my family. This cure can help break the barrier and that is what I want to do, be free. It is hard as it is to live with diabetes as a kid, but right now they will have to live with it their entire lives. That is more difficult then anything you could imagine. They will stress over work and their family, while having to carefully manage diabetes. This must be stopped earlier, and by that I mean now.

It won't be easy for me to train for several months and then to ride 100 miles. But it's not easy for me to watch my family live with diabetes either!"

It's not easy for any of us...That's why we three brothers and Ryan are teaming up!! Help make this dream of a cure for diabetes become reality by helping raise awareness and donating to the cause.
