Team Kasper

Team Kasper is at it again!! Last year, Scott, Paul, Doug, and Ryan Kasper participated in the 100-mile JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes in LaCrosse Wisconsin (where Ryan was awarded the Best Young Rider award!!). This year, we will reassemble in September at the JDRF Ride to Cure in Lake Tahoe. What makes this ride special is that it comes just after Jake Kasper's 10th anniversary with T1D.

Our mission continues to be to raise the money needed to fund research for T1D prevention, improved treatment, and ultimately a cure!! For our family (Bunny, Matthew, Jake, Anne, and Zach), this is the ultimate prize!! Our goal is to ride until we turn Type One into Type None and create a world without Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).  But we can only accomplish that goal with your help!!

Here are some of the numbers associated with Jake's decade of T1D:

    • In 10 years, the average person with T1D will need 14,600 insulin injections to remain alive.
    • If on an insulin pump for 10 years, there will be at least 1,117 infusion site changes.
    • The retail cost of 10 years of insulin (at Jake's small doses) is approximately $72,000. That will only grow as Jake gets bigger and his insulin needs increase!
    • The retail cost of the pump supplies required to deliver his life sustaining insulin for 10 years is nearly $30,000.
    • In the past 10 years, Jake has checked his blood sugar (by pricking his finger with a needle) approximately 36,500 times.
    • The cost of the test strips to do those checks is $54,700!

Those numbers are just the beginning, and don't account for the any of the personal toll that this disease takes on the people to live with it every day. The swings from high blood sugar to low blood sugar and back again makes Jake feel like garbage on a regular basis. Oh - and then there's the constant dosing of insulin and the worry that if the calculation isn't right, the insulin dose could be deadly!!

So - Team Kasper is at it again. This time, the 4 of us, along with our personal cheering squad of Grammy and Poppy Kasper, will be headed to the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes in Lake Tahoe. We will tackle the 72-mile ride in the Sierra Nevada mountains around the shores of Lake Tahoe. As we train between now and September, our goal will be two-fold: train to get ready to complete this physical challenge, and raise the money needed to help achieve our ultimate goal.

We would be most appreciative if you would help by making a donation. Thank you for your help!!
