Dear Friends and Family,
It is ride fundraising time again. I am doing a much closer ride event and probably not as difficult but truly just as important. JDRF usually hosts multiple ride locations and now, for the second year in a row, there will be a ride at LaCrosse. The ride will occur in the middle of August and will go from LaCrosse across the Mississippi River, down to Iowa and back.
It does not sound as challenging or daunting as Death Valley but 100 miles in the August humidity in Wisconsin, as you all know is a great challenge. It is, however, nothing next to the challenge that Daniel and Eric and all of the other type 1 kids face every day.
This will be my fifth ride. I have started training and riding with the nearly 100 riders from just the Madison area. This is a national ride and people will come from all over, to pitch in for a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Even since our first ride just seven years ago, the progress made by JDRF funded research has accelerated dramatically. In fact, JDRF funding and leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes research
Support for JDRF-funded research is not just a long-term investment. While a cure is JDRF?s ultimate goal, research to treat and prevent the complications of this insidious disease, and preventing it from occurring in the first place, are also a major focus. Since April 1 of this year, a JDRF-funded study was announced showing that some people with type 1 diabetes may be protected from complications, JDRF-funded scientists announced that they had identified key triggers for regeneration of pancreatic beta cells (the cells that make insulin), a JDRF-funded study found an experimental drug that may slow kidney disease, and JDRF and Amylin announced a partnership to investigate co-formulating two hormones for treating type 1 diabetes.
It is my personal goal to raise at least $4,000 this year to help fund even more exciting announcements. I would greatly appreciate whatever support you can give in meeting this goal. Your contribution is tax deductible.
Thank you in advance for helping us fight diabetes. I?ll write back after the Ride, and tell you all about it.
