Ella Switzer and her mom's 100 mile fundraising quest for type 1 diabetes

Ella thanks you for your help

Hello friends! Many of you know that last year I bought a bike with the goal of participating in the JDRF's Ride to Cure Diabetes. Thanks to so many of you for your support with both my fundraising and training. Both were a huge success! I wish that is all it took to make Ella's diabetes disappear, but it is not, and that is why I will continue to do what I can to help JDRF's efforts to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.

My hope when you spend time with Ella or meet her for the first time is that you see a caring, loving, bright-eyed "almost" 8 year old that is the Ella that I love. The one who loves to color, dress-up in fancy hats and that can put most adults to shame on the ski slopes:) A kid with regular troubles about friends, what's for dinner and when pajama day at school is. That is what being "almost" 8 should really be about.

What we do behind the scenes is test Ella's blood sugar at least 10 times a day, change her insulin pump site every 2/3 days (which has a bigger needle then most adults would be comfortable with), and worry about the scar tissue and healing of each and every one of these sites. When she goes to a party we are calculating, watching her, and giving her insulin for every bite that goes into her mouth, with the added calculation of how much excercise she will be doing. I hope that you don't realize when we are pulled over on the side of the highway that Ella's blood sugars are through the roof and we are changing her site and telling her that she can't eat yet, even though she is hungry. That when you see the light on in her room at night I am testing her and wondering if it is safe to go to bed.

I feel fortunate that Scott and I can take most of this responsiblity from her. I do not want her to have to do this on her own!

This is why I am riding 100 miles again on July 27th. This is why I have committed to raising $4000. Please help me reach this goal and give as generously as possible.

Thank you so much and I appreciate all of your help.
