JDRF Ride To Cure Diabetes post ride update
I wanted to thank everyone for your support and donations. Thanks to everyone's generosity, I raised just over $4,600 for JDRF.
July 27th was a perfect day in Burlington, VT, which made it ideal for me to attain my goal of riding 100 miles. There were 170 riders in VT and in total we raised over $600,000. Of those 170 riders, 36 had Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Not everyone rode 100 miles, but whatever distance we rode, we were all there for the same reason, so we all had a common bond.
Right before the ride started, I was lucky enough to meet a couple from Indiana with whom I spent the majority of the day. We got to know each other and our connection to the cause and the miles flew by. The course was an out and back with many climbs, some fairly challenging. But, with aid stations about every 15 miles there were plenty of opportunities to refill drinks, eat and do whatever else was needed to continue our journey. Supportive volunteers were at every stop and in SAG cars on the course helping mke the journey a little easier.
I rode the last 20 miles alone since I wanted to ride a little faster than the others. It gave me the opportunity to reflect on my reason for taking on this challenge while realizing that if Brad hadn't been diagnosed with T1D almost 10 years ago, I probably would not have gotten involved with the JDRF and met so many fantastic, inspirational people.
I am so glad I challenged myself to ride 100 miles! I felt great when I finished - both physically and mentally. It was my first official century ride, but it will not be the last. The 3 other riders, from my local JDRF chapter, and I all plan on riding again next year, probably in VT. We hope to recruit some additional riders to join us on this amazing journey.
Take pride in knowing that no matter how much you donated, it made a difference! It will enable more research towards better treatments, prevention, and hopefully, one day, a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Thanks again and keep me in mind next year when you are considering which charities you want to support.
With much appreciation,
Thank you for your support!
