Welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!
As you have gathered, I have signed up to "Ride for a Cure" for Type 1 Diabetes. Many of you know that my daughter, Adelyn, has had Type 1 diabetes for over 10 years, so I'm riding on her behalf to raise money for research and awareness for the cause. JDFR is an organization we have aligned ourselves with over the past 10 years and feel strongly that they will find a cure of help those living with Type 1 better manage the disease.
If you are not familiar with Type 1, in a nutshell Type 1 (often confused with type 2) is an autoimmmune disease that destroys the pancreas' ability to make insulin. Gently speaking, without insulin you can't survive. In order to live, a Type 1 has to take insulin shots daily; as well take at least 7-8 blood samples per day to monitor their blood sugar level. So, it's easy to assume "Oh, all you have to do is take insulin the rest of your life and you'll be fine", but unfortunately matching the exact dosage of insulin needed is impossible, resulting in life threatening consequences. When one sees my daughter it is easy to think: "Oh, she looks normal", but what we don't know is what is happening on the inside....the internal damage caused by diabetes.
In my endeavor to raise awareness and money, money that would be given directly to the researchers seeking a cure, I have signed up to "Ride for a Cure". Specifically, I have signed up for a 120 mile ride through Death Valley, California. This will be a "one day" monumental challenge for me, but it doesn't come close in comparison to the daily struggles of managing and living with Type 1 diabetes.
