Welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!
For the past two years iDigital LLC has been proud to join the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in their Ride to Cure Type 1 Diabetes! Once again we are here to ask for your help with this incredible journey!
Myself (Gregory Ashworth, President) along with my girlfriend Jordan Gumke, will be joining approximately 25 other NW Residents, and several hundred riders nationally in Tucson this November to ride for this cause! This will mark my 3rd year riding for the cure, and Jordan's first!
Each of us will pedal away for up to 100 miles, and raise over $4,000 to help JDRF along with their cause!
With that in mind, I am here to ask YOU to help me out with this important goal, and contribute to our ride campaign! Your tax deductible donation goes straight to JDRF and their efforts to help find a cure.
What is Type 1 Diabetes (T1D)?
Type 1 Diabetes, or T1D, is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects over 3 million people in the US alone. While generally associated with children, T1D can strike anyone, of any age, at any time.
In T1D the bodies immune system attacks the pancreas, reducing and eventually destroying the bodies ability to produce the hormone insulin. Insulin is vital for our survival, breaking down glucose in the blood, and turning it into energy. Without insulin glucose builds up in the blood stream, causing sugar crystals to form in the blood stream, resulting in pain, loss of eyesight, muscle damage, and if left untreated eventual death general from lack of nutrition.
Type 1 Diabetes is in no way related to Type 2 Diabetes. It is not caused by nor can it be treated by diet, exercise, or weight loss. It is genetically linked, and life long.
Can T1D be Cured?
Managed? Yes. Cured? No. For now.
At the moment those affected by T1D manage their condition through a regimen of blood testing and insulin injections - generally 5-7 times EVERY day! Devices like insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMS's) help to automate this process but do not eliminate them. Overtime the constant strain on the body of repeated high and low blood sugars commonly results in complications such as loss of eye sight, severe muscle damage, as well as kidney and liver damage. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and limb amputation in the US today.
Generally diagnosed between ages 3 and 7, those living with T1D spend a life full of pricked fingers, blood sugar testing, and injections. Overtime the constant poking and prodding builds up scar tissue in the hands, legs, arms and abdomen, making the process difficult and painful - but still just as necessary. Without this constant process, blood sugars can climb to lethal levels in mere hours.
How Will my Donation Help?
JDRF partners with medical companies, researchers, and patients nationwide, to help develop better treatments, and eventually, a cure for T1D.
At present JDRF is working on several major projects that have already shown great success in helping those with T1D; first by easing the pains of treatment, second by limiting the need for those treatments, and finally restoring the function of the pancreas to natural levels.
With your help, treatments such as the "Artificial Pancreas", "Encapsulation", and "Smart Insulin" can become a reality for millions around the world, and a cure and prevention of this disorder will be just around the corner!
Join me in helping JDRF turn Type One into Type None!
