Join me in the fight to cure, better treat and prevent type 1 diabetes!

Mom & Jason at the beach
My Family at the same beach! We try to go back every year.

    Dear Friends & Family,

As many of you may know, my mother died of complications from Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 43.  She was diagnosed without warning and seemingly at random in her early thirties.  At the time she was a successful marathon runner and a general model of health. Unfortunately this disease has nothing to do with one's diet or lifestyle.  T1D is a auto-immune disease in which the body attacks the pancreas, killing off all insulin producing cells.  Without insulin, the body cannot metabolize glucose..the body's source of energy.  At this point diabetics begin a race to save their own lives, in an attempt to control blood sugar levels by insulin injection.  Sugar levels too high cause nerve damage and failure of the eyes, kidneys, limbs, GI tract, etc.  Sugar levels too low can cause coma and death.

This disease is genetic, but frequently occurs in families with no prior history.  As a tribute to my mother's memory, and as a way of saving other families from being torn apart by this disease, I currently sit on the Board of JDRF and help to raise funds for this organization.

Forbes consistently rates JDRF one of the top 5 'all star' charities for cost efficiency, with >85% of funds raised going directly to research grants.  They are currently funding clinical trials on three inventions which we are hoping will be on market by 2020: an 'artificial pancreas' (essentially an implanted feedback loop of a glucose monitor and insulin pump), smart insulin, and encapsulated beta cell implants.  These inventions, if successfully funded to market, will dramatically change the quality and longevity of life for diabetics.  Medical science is currently at point to eliminate much of the hardship, if not the disease itself, during our lifetime.

For this reason, I have chosen to dedicate my time and resources to support this organization's fight against the disease.  As your friend, I ask you to please consider supporting JDRF in my efforts.  I will be returing to Lake Tahoe to ride a challenging but gorgeous 72 mile loop around the lake in honor of my mother, Karen Ivey Volz.  It is my goal to raise 15k$ before the Sep 7th ride I will need all the help I can get.  Last year my team was awarded the Yellow Jersey - cycling's top prize - for our fundraising efforts.

    Thank you for your support!
