The jersey. In Rose's memory.

“Mommy, I just want to be free.”

It was one of the bad days when Catherine spoke those words while sobbing on Mommy’s shoulder.  One of those days when she becomes overwhelmed with sadness because of her disease.  One of those days when she wants to know why God chose her to carry this burden. She wants to be free of the over 15,000 finger pokes to test her blood sugar she has endured since being diagnosed at age four.  She wants to be free of the insulin injections which total over 7,000 since her diagnoses; the 5 or more daily injections keep her alive until a cure can be found.  She wants to be a normal 11 year old and enjoy a carefree childhood as any child deserves.

Rose wrote those words 8 years ago.  Catherine Bess is now 19, out on her own and still struggling with her care.  Bess still wants to be free of this disease but she still doesn’t take her 5 injections a day or test her blood sugar all that much.  A promise is a promise.  Rose made it to Bess and I too have made the promise to do what I can to help find a cure so she can be free.

This year I am again asking for your generous donation to this cause.  I don’t have a great hook this time like, ‘I am riding Death Valley’ or I have a Brain Tumor, hard to beat that one, right?  No, it’s just me trying to ride a bike 100 miles in Burlington Vermont the 26th of July.  Something after 3 tries I have yet to accomplish.   I will be in Vermont with 20 of my teammates.  That’s one third our team.  Yes the JDRF NW Chapter has grown from Rose’s first ride of 6, to now to over 60 riders of all experiences and speeds.  We are a fun group riding for a singular cause.  This is the only cause I really work on, you may have more than one.  JDRF is one of the top non-profit organizations out there.  Upwards of .92 cents on the dollar does go to where you want it to go, to research.  Not a lot of organizations can say that.

The Ride to Cure is also growing, they added another rider jersey last year.  They award a special jersey to the best kid diabetic rider, the top fundraiser and the Spirit Jersey.  This new one is called the Promise jersey.  It’s a jersey awarded to a non-diabetic who embodies making some type of commitment to do what they can to help find a cure.  This jersey is emblazoned with the JDRF logos, The Promise is written on the back and it stands out like the other specialty jerseys.  Oh and there’s one more thing.  There is also a Rose emblazoned all over this particular jersey.  JDRF created this jersey in honor of my wife and her promise she made to Bess.  It’s been very special to experience its creation as well as having the honor present it to Rose’s cousin Mary Hubble in Nashville last year.

Don’t break the promise.  Please do what you can for this cause and help find a cure for this stinking childhood disease.   Please make an electronic donation or make a check out to JDRF and send it to me.

    Thank you.
