"Welcome to the Club." That is what my uncle said to me after I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. It was not a club I wanted to join, but it was the way it was meant to be. At least I am in good company, my father, aunt and uncle are in the club with me. I hope that I will not have to share the phrase, "Welcome to the Club" with my children or nieces or nephews! That is why I want to raise funds for Type 1 Diabetes research -- to make sure the membership in this club does not increase!
I will be riding this July with my father. He was diagnosed in 1972, just after his 3rd birthday. Most kids that are diagnosed don't have family members with the disease, so they have no one who knows what it is like to live with diabetes. My father sympathizes with me when I am having a difficult time. Also, my father has been a great role model for me. He has taught me that diabetes is just something I have and have to take care of, but it is not something that is meant to prevent me from having a full active life. I am glad he will be riding with me so we can support each other.
I was diagnosed in February 2010. I was 9 years old. I had referred to myself as "almost diabetic" for a couple of years before my diagnosis. I knew I was "almost diabetic" because I had participated in study (partially funded by JDRF) that indicated I had 4 of the 5 auto-anitbodies that likely cause diabetes. So, it was only a matter of time before I was "totally diabetic".
My father and I thank you for you support in JDRF's efforts to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes!
