Hello Friends and Family!
This year is the first year (that I can remember) where I don't have any scholarly responsibilities. I have enjoyed staying busy with work, but am also trying to find new ways to expand my horizons and push myself to experience things out of my comfort zone.
In that vein, I have decided to participate in a Half-Ironman (triathlon) in April, and am taking part in JDRF's (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) Ride to Cure Diabetes in November. This ride, which is 111 miles (in one day) takes place in Tucson AZ. I will be riding with hundreds of other riders across the country to improve the lives of all people affected by Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).
Type 1 Diabetes is the leading cause of adult blindness and non-traumatic lower limb amputations. In addition, it is a major contributor to nerve damage, stroke and heart disease and will shorten the life expectancy of those affected by at least 20 years and?..there is no cure. This auto-immune disease imposes a demanding regiment. It requires complete vigilance twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Those affected must keep themselves alive by treading a delicate balance between food, exercise and insulin, often sticking themselves with needles up to 10 times a day. It is an exhausting challenge.
So, I have decided to reach my hand out to others in need and help raise funds for type 1 research. I hope I can count on your financial support in helping me reach my very ambitious goal of $4,000. Together we can give over one million children a long and healthy life ahead. Type 1 has no cure, but with your help, we will find one.
EVERY dollar counts! Please donate online www.kalync.com or mail a check payable to JDRF to:
Wilmington, NC 28403
Thank you again for your support!

PS I am hoping to put together a blog at some point so you can following along as I train/fundraise/prepare for the ride - I will email you a link when I get it set up. http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=9076942216548384481#allposts
