Onward to Tucson and a Ride to Cure Diabetes

Ann has joined for Tucson

Hello everyone and welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!

I'm super jazzed this year to be riding in my first JDRF ride event taking place in Tucson, Arizona, on Nov 22nd as part of the 31st el Tour de Tucson.  The Tucson event is one of several nationally whose mission is to raise support and awareness that will one day lead to a cure for those living with Type 1 diabetes.

For nine plus years my personal connection with the disease is my daughter Callie diagnosed at age 8.  For Cal I ride and for the so many others out there, who thankfully because of the discovery of insulin over a hundred years ago, through taking injections or pump distribution, regular monitoring every few hours, managing carbohydrates in their diet, can and do successfully lead a normal life.

There's not a day goes by that I am not thankful for that discovery which at the time was a miracle but that was over a hundred years ago and it's time for another miracle.  We as human race are living in times when we have far far too much information for the next link not to have yet occurred.

It is for that next link that I participate in this ride and historically the last 9 years have along with my family, participated in the fall NYC Foley's Square Walk for the Cure.

This year I wanted to do something different to support JDRF and with having had the Ride series in the back of mind the last couple of years, particularly the Arizona ride, I decided this was the year for this event.

Please donate to support my participation in the Tucson JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes to help further JDRF's research in type 1 diabetes, working every day to a cure.  Every dollar I raise helps them continue to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community until a cure is found.

I'm underway with my training and fundraising.  Thank you for supporting the work of JDRF and advancing the research towards a cure for type 1 diabetes and for supporting this Ride and my participation in it to raise awareness about this great and much needed cause!  Follow my blog on my progress at

    Thank you!

    A week from now...
literally as the clock goes my participation in the 2014 JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes will be over. But let me escalate a few hours before as on that morning at I believe 7am I will line-up with what promises to be thousands of other bicyclists from all over the country probably world drawn to this 32-year-old bicycling endurance event in Tucson, AZ, the El Tour de Tucson.
We are drawn for many reasons and some I don't yet know. [More at ]

The Bronx and Home to Brooklyn for the Finish
Crossing the Tri-Boro on initial view from leading to it, seemed okay but that's a big bridge! Leading up to its pedestrian/bike path we had to carry bikes up the stairs wasn't a big deal just lot of us doing it but it was pretty organized, people taking their time. [more at]

Pump up the tires, Gain some speed...
Felt like I had a private cycling lesson yesterday. The Crankees scheduled a training ride on our familiar trip beginning on the New Jersey waterside Henry Hudson Road about half a mile down from the GW up to the Palisades Interstate Park at Alpine and then getting on 9w to Piermont NY and back via 9w into Fort Lee. I say private lesson as the turnout was me and JDRF coaches Cary and Jeff, both of who offered me much input and encouragement during the ride on my journey to be a 'cyclist'. [more at].

Nice day and a few more miles....
A great day was had. Not only for me but my wife joined a training ride we had this morning in Prospect Park with 'coach' Bob and several other Crankees, Jon, Cary, couple of other new folks, Jeff and Rachel. We logged some loops [more at]

If I added up all the Miles...
Of 'training' riding I've done last three weeks I would be right about 85 or so right now a good portion of the Arizona ride. So far I seem to be averaging 10-11 miles per hour which is nothing to a seasoned rider but at this stage for me I'm pleased. More at
