Welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!
As most of you know I went from banker to Executive Director for JDRF Arkansas last year. My move from corporate to non-profit `was motivated by a lot of things but none being more important than another parent never losing their child. When I started this job I knew that JDRF was an exceptional organization having volunteered with them as a banker but I truly did not realize the magnitude of what they do for families in their mission to find a cure for T1D. I underestimated the severity of this devastating, life altering and fatal disease as well as the impact it has on families. T1D strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet and lifestyle. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Because insulin is essential to turning food into energy, a type 1 diabetic's life, regardless of age, requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin. I am humbled by the families that I work with that have been affected by this terrible disease and honored to be a part of their lives in some small way. While I care deeply about our T1D adults, it is the children that tug at my heart strings! Their stories of hardship bring me to tears and their valor and coping skills around what they have to do daily just to survive inspire and amaze me. They are truly heroes as are their parents. I have put pictures of just a few on this page. We ride with a bracelet made by one of our kids knowing that we ride to make their lives better. I know that I have made the right decision to work for JDRF which is the largest non-profit funder of type 1 diabetes research in the world. Their goal is to eventually cure and prevent T1D entirely, but along this path they are seeking to deliver an ongoing stream of therapies to improve the lives of those with T1D. A better life is my hope for our families and why I’m taking part in the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes, along with hundreds of riders from around the world. We are raising money for JDRF in order to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community until a cure is found.
I have been hard at work training and fundraising, and your gift today will propel me toward the finish line. Please donate and help JDRF achieve its goal of a world without T1D.
Please check back to view my fundraising progress as my Ride weekend approaches. Thank you for your support.
