Welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!

In honor of my son, Sebastian, I’m taking part in the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) “Ride to Cure Diabetes”, along with hundreds of riders from around the world, to raise money for JDRF. I will ride 72-miles around Lake Tahoe on September 5, 2014.

    Our Story

On December 8, 2012 our lives changed forever. On this day, our son Sebastian, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 has no cure, nor is it something Sebastian will outgrow.  For some individuals, there are other diseases that are associated with being a type 1 diabetic, Sebastian is one of them. He also has: infectious cyclic thrombocytopenia and hashimotos. Sebastian had to learn how to manage his disease by regulating his blood sugar levels and  continuously balancing insulin with food and exercise. He must test his blood sugar by pricking his finger 12 to 20 times a day to see if his levels go dangerously high or dangerously low. He needed to learn how to count his carbohydrates and to figure out how much insulin he injects for every meal.  And for the rest of his life he will be obligated to do so. We pray that a cure is found in his lifetime. Aside from the daily challenges of living with Type 1, there are many severe life-limiting or life-threatening risks including blindness, kidney failure, stroke, nerve damage, and amputation.

Sebastian’s senior year, he wanted to do something amazing. He joined the cross-country team and made it to the State Finals! He was doing exceptionally well for the first two miles then he fell behind and collapsed at the finish line. His pediatrician thought he had the flu, a few days later he was hospitalized for four nights with blood sugar over 700! He easily could have slipped into coma.  It took approximately three months for him to recover, was homeschooled and continued training for track and made it to the State Champions! Sebastian was recruited for track but decided to stay close to home, close to his doctors because he had so much to manage. He never has a day off from diabetes.

Sebastian is my inspiration. I felt so helpless until this past February when I decided to try something new and joined JDRF Ride! I have not been on a bike since I was a little girl! I’m working hard training, and your gift today will propel me toward the finish line!

Please check back to view my fundraising progress as my Ride weekend approaches. Thank you so very much for your support.

     With Sincere Gratitude,

Pattie, Pasquale, Cristina, Julia and Sebastian
