I HATE T1D! Please Support My Efforts in Turning Type One into Type NONE!

Best Buds! Miss you everyday
DZ Foundation, In loving memory of Daniel Zolotorofe

Welcome to Melissa Frascella's personal fundraising page for the 2014 Ride to Cure Diabetes!!

Plain and simple, I hate Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). I hate that millions of people worldwide have to suffer from such a devastating chronic disease. I hate that young children have to feel ‘different’ from their friends because they have T1D. I hate that these young children eventually grow into adolescents and adults, and despite the advancements in technology, there is still no cure for them. But most of all, I hate T1D for a very specific and personal reason: for taking the life of my beloved family member and friend, Danny Zolotorofe.

Danny tragically lost his ten-year battle with T1D when he was only 20-years-old, suffering from every diabetic’s worst nightmare: Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). Danny was truly one-of-a-kind; he had this innate ability to make you laugh, to make you feel loved and to make you feel like you were important, even after the very first time meeting him. He never let T1D slow him down and had achieved so many accomplishments in such a short amount of time: student council president, honor student at the University of Maryland, esteemed member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, to name a few. Though Dan’s time here on Earth was cut way too short, his memory will live on forever. Now, here’s where you come in to help me and my family do so!

On Saturday, November 22, 2014, my dad and I will be riding our bikes 50 miles through the Arizona desert as members of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Ride to Cure Diabetes team. Not only is this an incredible opportunity to support such a great cause, but it's a memory my dad and I will have forever!

As a health and fitness advocate with a Masters in Public Health, I truly know what it means to be grateful to have your health. One of my favorite quotes comes from an author named Augusten Burroughs in which he proclaims that “When you have your health, you have everything. When you do not have your health, nothing else matters at all.” By participating in the 2014 JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes, I will not only embrace my commitment to health but will be raising awareness for those suffering from T1D, while simultaneously keeping Dan’s strength and determination in mind throughout each mile.

I have set a personal fundraising goal for myself of $5,000. To some, this may seem a bit ambitious, but to me, this demonstrates my real commitment to finding a cure for T1D for others I know fighting the same fight: my dear friends Jennifer Redlitz, Jamie Migliaro and the hundreds of members of the Northern NJ/Rockland County JDRF Chapter I met while I was an employee at JDRF. I will commit myself to these individuals, along with the millions of others with T1D, one pedal at a time. As one of my cherished friends, I am asking for your support in helping me achieve my fundraising goal by donating to my efforts in the fight against T1D. Something that has stuck with me throughout each personal fundraising campaign is that every amount, no matter how minimal, truly adds up and makes an impact.

Please know how much your contribution means to me and my family. All donations are 100% tax-deductible, as JDRF is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation. Please know that you are truly taking an active role in keeping Danny’s memory alive for our family and friends, who miss this remarkable man every single minute of every day that he is gone.
