You know the drill...I have been Type One Diabetic (T1D) for 39 years, 3 months, 5 days (at the time I was writing this) But, if you know me, you know, that I have not lost my faith or hope. In fact, I firmly believe that the cure is on the horizon, and it will be thanks to JDRF. I am now on the Board of Directors for my local chapter, AND I am on the International JDRF Voices Council. As such, I just got back from the Annual Conference in Washington DC, and let me tell you, JDRF is really working on turning Type One into Type None - go see this short video and if you don't want to donate after you see it, let me know, I will never ask you again.:http://tinyurl.com/TypeNone
JDRF is the single largest funder of diabetes research in the world, and they WILL find a cure, eventually, but before that, they are already funding research that will find a vaccine, and before that, they are already funding research, and lobbying the FDA, and bringing to market, the Artifical Pancreas. I was accpted to participate in a clinical trial this past April, but due to my over active thyroid, that has been postponed for a little while. Here is a video that explains it if you want more information: http://tinyurl.com/T1DAP
Another exciting prospect that JDRF is funding is implanted, encapsulated beta cells. See, in T1D, the body's immune system (T cells) attack and kill the insulin-producing Beta cells. They can't just take Beta cells from someone else, and implant them in me, cuz my T cells are murderous little SOBs and would just kill them again, So with this new ENCAPSULATED system, the beta cells are encapsulated in a permeable pouch - the insulin can get OUT, but the T cells can't get IN. I SAW this device in Washington 3 days ago. This technology will be in clinical trials next year, and I plan to be on the list. Encapsulated Beta cells will provide up to 24 months of freedom from blood testing, insulin injections, high blood sugars, low blood sugars, not to mention the worry about ALL the complications, Here is the video if you want more information: http://tinyurl.com/T1DEncap
JDRF-funded research led to my using a Continuous Glucose Monitor for the last year.. My A1C (a blood test doctors hold over your head to tell you if you are a "good" diabetic or a "bad" one), has improved by more than 50% and I don't have far to go to be a "good" one (by my doctor's standards, anyway).
Look, these walks have raised more than 1 BILLION dollars for research, $20 at a time! Moving a cure through the pipeline from research to FDA approval and getting it the market is expensive and it is time to turn Type One into Type NONE!! Your donation is valuable, appreciated and needed more than ever...Just click to link to make a donation.
And if you need another short video to tug your heart strings, watch this one - JDRF really outdid it with this one, I think you will agree: http://tinyurl.com/T1DBelieve
As always, thank you from the bottom of my heart!
