Dear Family and Friends,
It's time to put on our walking shoes! This years JDRF Walk for a Cure is Sat. Oct.26th at Rillito Park, 9:00am. We will be there again as Team Mia to continue working to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that affects around 80 new families each day! On August 26th, 2009 it affected our family when our daughter Mia was diagnosed with type 1 (T1D). Mia's pancreas does not make insulin on its own, we have to give it to her every time she eats and whenever her blood sugar is high. We test her blood sugar by poking her finger with a needle 8-12 times per day.
Mia has come a long way in the four years since she was diagnosed! This summer Mia went to Washington DC as part of Children's Congress, a 3 day event where she got to meet kids from all over the country who have T1D. They got to network with each other and with celebrities with type 1. The main event of CC was the children going to their reporesentative and congresmen to share their story and urge them to renew funding for T1D research. It was excting to tell the congressmen and their staff members about the promissing research that is going on in the areas of treatment, prevention and cure of T1D. There are a couple of technoligies being trialed now that would make a huge difference both in Mia's daily life and in her long term health. By keeping her blood sugar in tighter control, (which is the focus of the technology) long term complications are less likely. These research projects need funding to continue. Last year, people like you and me all over the country raised $110 million doing fundraisers, including this walk. It's more important than ever to continue to raise the funding so that this amazing technology moves from trials to our home! Mia did an amazing job advocating for government support of continued funding, and now we are asking for your help to reach our goals in supporting the research wtih private funds.
It is our hope and prayer that someday Mia will say "I used to have T1D". We need your help to make this a reality. Please support Mia by going to our walk page to make a donation and/or to register to walk with our team. No donation is too small, it all adds up to make a big difference! We appreciate your support of Team Mia and look forward to seeing you on Walk Day! Thank you for helping us turn type 1 into type NONE!
