Its that time of year again. Diabetes walk. As many of you have shared our journey over the last 8.5 years, you know that every year we walk for a cure for diabetes with JDRF. Not only for our daughter, or our son who is at high risk with a 90% chance due to active antibodies, BUT for all the kids and adults living with this disease every day.
01/04/2005. Our lives changed forever. Not just my daughter who was diagnosised with Type 1 diabetes, But our whole family. Its a day we do not look back on and feel sorry for ourselves, but its a day we actually celebrate as a "Diaversary" . A day to celebrate many happy healthy years, a day to celebrate many incredible experiances and a day to love all the amazing people that has helped us along the way.
Today and over the next several months I will ask a small favor. Please donate or join our team and walk with us, in person or in spirt.
If you can please donate to Charlize Cure Crew. And if you would like we would love for you all to walk with us, If you would like to walk but cant, you can choose to be a VIRTUAL walker. You do not have to fundraise to walk with us (althought that would be fantastic ). Please share our page with everyone you know.
Here are some facts.....
In 8.5 years, Charlize ...
... was just 3 years old when she was diagnosed, She is 12 now.
... She has had to many to count glucose tablets and sugars to fix low blood sugars
...Many instances of blood sugars being so high the meter could not read, she was puking, or even hospitalized.
... Approximately 3500 shots of insulin
...1000 insulin pump site changes
...300 contiguous glucose monitor site changes ( CGM)
Lowest blood sugar on record for her is 26 ( normal non- diabetic is 80-120 )
9 diabetes walks
And she has the rest of her life for all those numbers to increase.
Would you like to know how JDRF funds are helping... Here is just one example....
Siblings of a type 1 diabetic only have a 10-15% chance of developing Type 1 Diabetes... Charlize brother, Sean has about a 90 % chance. He is followed by a company called trial net who is inpart funded by JDRF and others. They have several studies going on focusing on the development, the prevention of and the reversal of Type 1. Sean is in a preventive study, a study that has been provesn to help delay the onset of Type 1 by 10 years or more. This is just one example of what your funds help do.
In the 8.5 years we have lived with this horrid disease, we have seen several advancements in the care of diabetes. And getting closer to things like the artifical pancreas and hopefully even a cure.
