I am Nikkita and this is my family. I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes last November when I was 10 years old. It was wierd not knowing what was going to happen. I started having to test my blood EVERY day at least 5-6 times a day. Whenever I want to eat something I have to take an insulin shot to help break down the carbs/sugar in my food otherwise it stays in my blood and gets too high. I have to schedule my meals because you cant take insulin whenever you want so I have to think about what I want to eat especially desserts. I am getting better at knowing what food is good for me and which ones I shouldn't eat at all.
In the beginning it was hard because I am not good with math and we have to count carbs and then calculate (subtract & divide) and then do the same thing with my blood sugar count too. We add all these numbers together just to figure out how much insulin I need to have. IT SUCKS! But since I have to do this for the rest of my life, I am getting use to it. The hardest part is that I can't go to anyones house to spend the night unless they can help me with the calculations and put the insulin in the syringe. I can give myself my own shots even I don't like doing it.
I want other kids to never have Type I diabetes. I want them to find a cure. Please help me help them. I'm glad my diabetes doesn't keep me from being able to do physical things which is why I am going to walk for diabetes.
Thank you for your help.
