Hello! This will be the 4th year that my family and I participate in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. Many of you know that my daughter Kortnie was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in November 2009, by the time we walk in November 2013 she'll have lived with this chronic illness for 4 years.
By the time walk day arrives she will have poked her fingers and drawn blood from them over 14,000 times, she will have endured around 2,100 shots. Since June 2010, she has been using an insulin pump, it's a pager sized computer that administars insulin through a tube inserted in her belly or arm. She wears this 24/7/365. Imagine being hooked by a tube to a computer for your whole life....by the time walk day arrives she will have endured 370 site changes (the tube inserted under her skin).
Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children.
JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
