Hello! This year, our family will be walking in our 3rd JDRF Walk for a Cure for Type 1 diabetes. This is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children.
In February of 2010, we received devastating news. Our daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 5. It has changed our lives forever. Lia has to do 7 to 10 finger sticks on a normal day to check her blood sugar levels. We do our best to keep her stable, but its not always easy, since it's not just diet that affects her levels. Stress, growth spurts, illnesses, exercise, etc., they all can reek havoc on blood sugar levels. When she is experiencing a high or low, she feels horrible. It can feel like she's coming down with the flu, headaches, stomaches, affects her vision, makes her limbs heavy and sometimes almost unmovable. These aren't just things she experiences once in awhile, its something that happens several times a week. We also have to get up often in the middle of the night to check or correct blood sugar. Now think about how this affects her school day, vacations, etc. We need this cure!!!!
Before 1922, a child with diabetes would only live for about 6 months or less after diagnosis. It was a death sentence. The advancements in treatments that are keeping our loved ones alive longer and healthier is largely because of the funding in research from JDRF. JDRF is our best bet for a cure and for better treatment. If you can, please donate to help us get there!! If you'd like, join our walk team, Princess Lia's Court!! We'd love to have you!!
Thanks so much,
the Blackwell Family
