Hello! This year, I will once again be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $89 million.
Kalyn and I will be walking on Team Gracie Jo. Gracie is Kalyn's best friend. She was diagnosed nearly 4 years ago when she was only 3 years old! She is the toughest little girl that I have ever met. Kalyn and Gracie have had numerous playdates and sleep overs and I have had to check her blood sugar prior to every meal and calculate the insulin after every meal. Gracie takes each of the pricks (and there were several extra while I was learning!) without complaint. She is also beginning to understand how to check her own blood sugar levels.
I think it is amazing that she is able to take responsibility for her disease. However, Kalyn and I are participating in this walk in order to raise money to find a cure. I am hoping that one day VERY SOON, she will be able to grab a snack without worrying about how many carbs it has and how much insulin she needs to take or if she needs to wait before eating because her blood sugar is too low.
Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children.
There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
