July 09, 2012 was a day changer for me. I recieved a call @ 5am telling me that my Nephew, Carmelo Angel, was diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes.
I remember sitting in my bed crying for hours, not able to sleep because I was devestated from the news. 6 years young and having to live with an incurable disease puts a huge weight on one's heart, especially for his immediate family.
I also remember driving to the Hospital to go see him, talking to myself trying to convince myself that everything was going to be alright. The LONGEST 45 minute drive in my life, tears pouring down my face, getting all the hurt out before, so I wouldn't 'break' in front of him.
Seeing him attached to machines, and watching his reactions to shots broke my heart, and I had to turn away a few times.
But after his mother arrived, I sat back and listened to her tell her son the MOST AMAZING story I've ever heard:
- "You remember on that Captain America movie how he was so small and skinny, and they gave him medicines and he grew bigger and stronger and he turned into a Super Hero?"
-"Well, that's just like you baby. You're going to grow and be so much stronger just like Captian America! What are Captain America's initials?"
-"C and A."
-"Who else has those intials?"
-"That's right! Captain America, Carmelo Angel. You're Captain America baby!"
There wasn't a dry spot on my face. My sister is Wonder Woman, She was able to help his rid his fear of the shots when no one else could.
A few days later, he didn't want to leave the hospital, he had the best time there.
Now, a month later, he knows the process of his injections, why we do it, how we do it (He even does it himself sometimes), what's a carb free food, what isn't, what his medicine is called, what are the signs we look for in an emergency situation.
Carmelo is a genius. It's truly inspiring to see such a turn around. We still have our worries, questions, etc. But we learn every day from them. No question is a dumb question, unless it's not asked.
Carmelo Angel, is OUR CAPTAIN AMERICA
