Welcome to Sande's personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
As most of you know my husband, Kevin, suffers from Type 1 Diabetes. If you didn't know that, now you do and you know my motivation for wanting to help this organization.
Juvenile?...is probably your next question. Why Sande are you helping out JDRF? Thanks for asking and I will tell you why. Kevin was diagnosed with T1D when he was 21 years old. Certainly not a juvenile, but medical people consider his diabetes "juvenile" because it is type 1. He can't lose weight or adjust his diet to make this horrible disease go away like type 2 diabetics can. He has to inject himself several times a day with insulin and check his blood sugar levels several times a day. Until a cure is found people with T1D have to live constantly thinking about their blood sugars and adjusting accordingly. Imagine having to think about how much food you are putting in your mouth, calculating carbs to know how much insulin to take. Imagine miscalculating and taking too much insulin and as a result you feeling "shaky" or like you are going to pass out so you have to quick eat something and hope the food absorbs quickly enough to counteract the insulin “overdose”. Imagine having to carry food with you wherever you go because if you burn off too much food before the insulin gets into your system you end up with the same result. Us "normal" people take our pancreas for granted! Not only does he have to worry about his blood sugars, he has to worry about what the disease is doing to his body internally. He doesn't heal from cuts entirely. Diabetes and high blood pressure go hand in hand and as a result he has to be careful of developing cardiovascular disease as well as kidney disease. I could go on and on how horrible this disease is. It is bad...just bad and we need to find a cure!
My fundraising goal is not huge...a mere $150.00. I hope I can raise that and possibly more. I will be walking on 11/2 to create awareness for this terrible disease and support my husband.
And now JDRF's information:
The money raised will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
Please support me and donate to my Walk fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease.
Thank you for your support!
