Hello!
My name is Kaiden Markus Pickard. I am 6 years old and have had diabetes since I was 3. Living with diabetes is very challanging. It is tough to be so little and be so controlled and monitored. Mommy and my family, teachers and friends say that I am sssoooo brave and tough. I am so lucky to have my twin bro bro Kolby. He really looks out for me and sticks by my side all the time. He eats the same things I eat, and this helps me not feel different at school. He really is my best bud. I am so lucky that my mommy monitors my diabetes so well. I know that someday this will be my responsibility and I am learning a lot from her.
For a whole year I had to have insulin shots 4-5 times a day. I didn't like that very much, but I didn't complain too much. My body feels much better when my blood sugar is in control. For the past 2 years I have worn an insulin pump in my super neat pouch made by Aunt Lori. I like this much better than the insulin shots. However I still get my number checked by a finger prick all day long, and even while I am sleeping. I really hope that in my lifetime there will be a cure for diabetes!!!
This year, I'll be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $89 million.
Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children.
There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
Thank you!
Kaiden
