Once again I am JDRF's Walk Chair for the annual Walk To Cure Diabetes here on Saturday 10/12/13 at Leadbetter Beach. I do this every year for three reasons:
· My Dad was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was sixteen and despite eating healthy, not drinking or smoking and being an athlete his entire life, he passed away from complications when he was only 52.
· There are over 14,000 people here in our area with Type 1 diabetes, only one pediatric endocrinologist/diabetologist and no Central Coast JDRF chapter of our own to help support people here who are affected by the disease.
· JDRF is the world's leading fundraiser for Type 1 Diabetes research and is currently rated in the Top 5 Efficient Charitable Groups by Forbes. They aim to prevent, treat and ultimately cure Type 1 Diabetes, and have given over $3.5 million to UCSB and Sansum to support their research efforts locally which is awesome!
THIS YEAR I HAVE AMAZING NEWS TO SHARE WITH YOU!
Whereas last year we were just a grassroots group of Central Coast volunteers working with two JDRF employees out of LA, this year we’ve thankfully obtained a couple of grants that have provided us with the first full-time JDRF employee of our own, Rachel Wilkinson… and our efforts have multiplied phenomenally!
Rachel and I have been peas & carrots all year, working together to make things better for people all the way from Thousand Oaks to Lake Nacimento! We’ve organized and hosted 7 fun, family networking events (up from the measly 2 we had in 2012) including the first ever T1D School Forum where Central Coast families had access to both local and national experts offering advice about various aspects of navigating the school system with a T1D child! We also significantly increased sponsorships and partnerships with various awesome businesses in our communities.
On top of that, I was able to convince the most popular local TV personality, John Palminteri, to be our Walk Grand Marshall and the most popular local radio personality, Spencer Fischer, to be our event Emcee! I was also able to help land some editorial content in the Santa Barbara Independent.
The Walk is going to be bigger and better than ever this year and I am just SO THRILLED to see it growing right before my eyes! It literally has only happened because I have your support. Thank you all, so much, for pulling strings, helping out and making connections on my behalf this year!
If you are so inclined, please register to walk and join me for the Walk To Cure Diabetes Saturday 10/12/2013 at beautiful Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara.
