Jonah has had Type 1 Diabetes for half of his life...and he's only four years old.
Two years ago, on the day before his second birthday, Jonah was diagnosed. Since then, he's handled thousands of pricks, prods, pokes and middle-of-the-night blood checks with incredible heart, humor and hardly a complaint. He is a happy, easy-going, sweet, boy who loves construction vehicles, building forts, cutting plants, reading books and who eagerly shows off his insulin pump, and explains to other kids that: "My pancreas is broken."
Other than the plastic tube running from his tush to his pump pack, Jonah looks like any other preschooler -- playing with construction vehicles in the sand, turning over rocks to find cool bugs, crashing into things, laughing his glorious laugh, snuggling in to read a book, but the truth is that his life, our life, isn't anything like that of his classmates and their families. We weigh and measure every carb that he eats. Every meal. Every snack. Then we plug that number into his pump. His tiny fingertips, now riddled with dots, are pricked every three hours. At night, he's checked at least once. It is a constant, confounding, relentless roller coaster ride; trying to find the balance, on a daily and even hourly basis, between his blood sugar being too high, which is not good, or too low, which can be very dangerous. Diabetes is a moving target.
Only a few weeks after Jonah's diagnosis, TEAM JOMOKI was formed, as my way of doing something. I had to raise money and awareness. Each year our team of amazing friends has grown, and we've raised nearly $100,000 over the past two years. But it's not enough. This year I'm hoping to raise another $50,000. The money our JDRF Walk Team raises supports all of this life-changing research -- which will make a difference in Jonah's life, and in the lives of all kids, and adults, with this awful disease.
