Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes page!
Violet was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) on February 25, 2013. Type 1 Diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease. Her pancreas stopped producing insulin, which is essential to the ability to get energy from food. It has changed her life as she knows it forever. It could not have been prevented and there is no cure.
Her diagnosis was shocking and devastating. We had to suddenly think about keeping our child alive every minute of the day. We stayed in the hospital for three days and learned how to inject insulin, test blood sugars, count every single carb that goes into her mouth, and how to treat low and high blood sugars. We were scared. Very scared.
Have things gotten better since her diagnosis? Of course they have. We have our good days and we have our bad days. We have our “highs and lows.” We are living with diabetes every single minute of every day. The insulin she takes is not a cure, but only a treatment to stay alive. We can never take a break from diabetes. It is 24/7. It is there on vacations, holidays, and in the middle of the night.
My child should not have to suffer every day. She shouldn’t have to get needles stuck into her just so she can live. She shouldn’t have to carry around sugar everywhere she goes in case she has a dangerous low. She shouldn’t have to worry about not waking up in the morning. So we are walking this year to support finding a CURE. My family believes that one day there will be a cure. We have to. My daughter’s life depends on it.
We're taking steps to help JDRF progressively remove the impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D) from people's lives until no one has to fear developing this disease. By joining our Walk to Cure Diabetes team and making a donation to JDRF, you'll raise money to help fund critical T1D research and create a world without T1D.
JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
The challenge we've set ourselves - to raise money for JDRF and to walk - is modest compared to the daily challenges of life with T1D, which involves a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar testing and insulin injections to manage the disease.
