This year I will be participating in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes at Balboa Park. Our Walk Team - Cathy's Crew is in honor of my sister in law - Cathy Purpur who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in her 30s.
Several years ago, I was living in Westchester NY when Beth called to say her sister was diagnosed with diabetes. This was my first introduction to T1D, an autoimmune disease that you can not prevent and have done nothing to cause. Unlike type 2 diabetes, T1D is NOT reversible and no amount of exerise or change in diet will make T1D go away. The only hope is to find a cure through research. Years later, I find myself working for the largest charitable funder of T1D research. JDRF is able to fund $100 million of the most promising research in the world because of donations made to programs like the Ride to Cure Diabetes.
Every day 80 children and adults are diagnosed with this life threatening disease. Once diagnosed with T1D, you MUST inject insulin into your system several times a day, JUST TO STAY ALIVE.
Please consider making a contribution to T1D research that will lead to better treatments and a cure for this disease.
