Welcome to our Team's JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page! I'll be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds to improve the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D).
I am asking for your support. Please donate to my personal fundraising efforts. By doing so, you can help me make a difference for millions of people living with type 1 diabetes.
Why I started my Walk Team
As a staff-member of JDRF, I see the devastating effects of Type 1 Diabetes each and every day. From the very young babies who have been struck with this disease so early in life and have no idea why they have to get shots and finger pricks many times each day, to the grown adults who have been courageously battling this disease and its devastating side effects for years...they are a daily inspiration to me to raise funds for research to end this disease.
What is Type 1 Diabetes?
Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas and it stops producing insulin, a vitally needed hormone that enables you to get energy from food. (Unlike Type 2 Diabetes, the onset is sudden and has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle and there is nothing that you can do to prevent it.) T1D strikes both children and adults. It comes on suddenly, causes dependence on injected insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating and life-threatening complications.
A non-stop disease
Living with T1D is a constant challenge...there is never a "break" from the disease...it is a 24/7/365 job. Every bite of food and every activity, from the moment you wake up in the morning to the moment you go to bed at night, must be carefully calculated and balanced with multiple daily insulin doses. Blood glucose levels must be checked by finger pricks six or more times a day.
It is not cured by Insulin
While the multiple insulin injections each day allow the person with T1D to stay alive, they do not cure the disease, nor do they prevent the serious side effects which may include kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputations, heart attack, stroke, and more.
T1D strikes 15,000 children AND 15,000 adults each year
Approx. 80 people - 40 children/40 adults EVERY DAY!
Why give to JDRF?
JDRF's mission is to discover, develop, and deliver advances that CURE, better TREAT, and PREVENT type 1 diabetes. As the global leader in the fight against T1D, JDRF's research unites the best and brightest minds from around the world and supports those programs with the greatest potential of achieving our goals. JDRF maintains one of the best records among non-profits of effectively using supporters' contributions. More than 80% of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education.
